The Complete Bicycle Maintenance Schedule: Daily, Weekly & Monthly

A well-maintained bike is safer, faster, lasts longer, and costs far less to run. But maintenance doesn't have to be overwhelming — break it into a simple daily, weekly, and monthly routine, and your bike will always be ready to ride. Here's the complete bicycle maintenance schedule for Indian conditions.

Before Every Ride (2 minutes)

The “ABC” quick check keeps you safe:

  • A – Air: check tyre pressure and look for any cuts or embedded debris.
  • B – Brakes: squeeze both levers and confirm they engage firmly.
  • C – Chain & Cranks: glance at the chain (is it lubed?) and check the cranks/pedals spin freely.
  • Quick once-over: wheels spin true, quick-releases/thru-axles tight, nothing loose.

Weekly (or Every Few Rides)

  • Clean the chain and re-lube. Wipe the chain and apply PTFE Dry Lube (dry season) or All Weather Lube (monsoon). This is the single most impactful regular task.
  • Wipe down the frame. A quick clean with a waterless wash keeps grime from building up and lets you spot problems early.
  • Check tyre wear and pick out any embedded glass or thorns.
  • After every wet/muddy ride: clean, dry, and re-lube — don't wait for the weekly schedule.

Monthly

  • Deep-clean the drivetrain. Use the Drivetrain Deep Clean Kit (degreaser, brush, cloth) to clear built-up grime from the chain, cassette, and derailleur.
  • Clean the disc rotors. Wipe them with Rotor X Brake Cleaner to prevent squeal and maintain stopping power.
  • Check brake pads for wear and replace if low.
  • Check chain wear with a chain wear tool — replacing a stretched chain in time saves your cassette.
  • Inspect cables, bolts, and tyres for wear, and tighten anything loose to spec.
  • Check frame protection — top up or replace any worn frame protector sections.

Every Few Months

  • Service the suspension (MTB) — clean fork seals and apply Smooth Seal Fork Lube to keep travel smooth.
  • Top up tubeless sealant — it dries out over 2–3 months, faster in heat.
  • Check bearings (headset, hubs, bottom bracket) for play or roughness.

Seasonal: Adjust for the Weather

India's seasons demand different care. Switch to all-weather lube and clean more often during monsoon; switch to dry lube and watch for dust in summer. Read our seasonal guides for detail.

Annual: Full Service

Once a year, give your bike a thorough service — or have a shop do it. This includes overhauling bearings, checking the frame for damage, replacing worn cables and pads, and a complete drivetrain assessment.

Why This Routine Works

Most bike problems come from neglect — a dry chain, dirty drivetrain, or contaminated brakes. A few minutes regularly prevents expensive repairs and keeps every ride smooth and safe. Bookmark this schedule and your bike will thank you for years.
