Best Mountain Bike Trails in Uttarakhand | MTB Riding Guide India

Uttarakhand is one of India's premier mountain biking destinations — and criminally underrated on the global MTB circuit. With terrain ranging from pine-forested ridge trails above Dehradun to high-altitude technical descents near Auli and the remote river gorges of Rishikesh, the state offers something for every level of rider. Whether you're planning your first Himalayan ride or looking for a proper multi-day expedition, here are the best MTB trails in Uttarakhand.

Best MTB Trails in Uttarakhand

1. Dehradun to Mussoorie — The Classic Climb

Distance: 35km | Elevation gain: 1,900m | Difficulty: Hard

The most iconic road climb in the region, the Dehradun–Mussoorie highway is a rite of passage for Uttarakhand riders. The route winds through dense deodar and oak forests with panoramic views of the Doon Valley below. The descent back to Dehradun via the Camel's Back Road is legendary — fast, flowing, and worth every pedal stroke on the way up.

2. Chakrata — Pine Forest Singletrack

Distance: 20–40km | Difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Located 98km from Dehradun, Chakrata is Uttarakhand's best-kept MTB secret. The area offers some of the region's finest singletrack — narrow trails weaving through thick pine and rhododendron forests with minimal traffic and almost no other cyclists. The Tiger Falls trail is a favourite, combining flowing forest singletrack with a spectacular waterfall finish.

3. Auli — High-Altitude Descents

Distance: 10–25km descents | Elevation: 2,500–3,000m | Difficulty: Hard to Expert

Best known as a ski resort, Auli transforms into an MTB paradise in summer. The gondola carries you and your bike to 3,000m, from where you access open alpine meadows and technical rocky descents with views of Nanda Devi. This is the closest thing to alpine enduro riding in India — bring full-face protection and a properly set-up tubeless MTB.

4. Chopta to Tungnath — Alpine Trail Riding

Distance: 15km | Elevation: 2,700–3,680m | Difficulty: Moderate (altitude is the challenge)

The trail from Chopta to Tungnath temple is rideable for most of its length, offering sweeping Himalayan panoramas and high-altitude meadow terrain. The thin air above 3,500m is the main challenge — acclimatise for at least a day before attempting this ride. The descent back to Chopta through the forest is fast and rewarding.

5. Rishikesh — River Trail Riding

Distance: 20–50km | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Rishikesh is increasingly popular with MTB riders for its network of trails along the Ganges river gorge. The routes around Neer Garh and Rajaji National Park offer technical rocky sections interspersed with flowing river-bank paths. Rishikesh is also the best base for beginner riders visiting Uttarakhand — gentler gradients, good infrastructure, and the most developed cycling community in the state.

6. Kanatal — Orchard Trails

Distance: 15–30km | Difficulty: Moderate

Situated between Chamba and Mussoorie at 2,500m, Kanatal offers apple orchard trails and forest tracks with spectacular views of the Garhwal Himalaya. Less technical than Auli or Chakrata but perfect for intermediate riders who want scenery over challenge. The road from Kanatal to Dhanaulti is excellent for road cyclists too.

Difficulty Guide

Beginner: Rishikesh river trails, Kanatal orchard tracks
Intermediate: Dehradun–Mussoorie climb, Chopta alpine trails
Advanced: Chakrata singletrack, Auli summer descents
Expert: Auli to Gurso Bugyal, remote Garhwal ridge routes

Best Time to Ride in Uttarakhand

March to June is the prime season — clear skies, good trail conditions, and pleasant temperatures at altitude. April and May are particularly good for Auli and high-altitude trails before the monsoon arrives.

July to September (monsoon): Lower elevation trails like Rishikesh can still be ridden, but high-altitude routes become dangerous due to landslides and slippery conditions. Avoid Auli and Chopta during peak monsoon.

October to November is an excellent shoulder season — post-monsoon trails are lush, temperatures are ideal, and crowds are minimal. Many experienced riders consider this the best time for Uttarakhand MTB.

December to February: High-altitude trails are snowbound. Lower elevation riding around Rishikesh and Dehradun is possible on clear days.

Essential Gear for Uttarakhand Trail Riding

Uttarakhand's rocky terrain — loose shale, embedded granite, and monsoon-washed gravel — is tough on both rider and bike. A few essential gear considerations before you head up:

  • Frame protection. Rocky trails throw constant debris at your downtube and chainstay. The NAC Clear Frame Protector 360 (13-piece full-coverage PPF kit) and the NAC Chainstay Protector are essential additions before any Himalayan trail ride.
  • Trail storage. For day trips, the NAC Saddle Bag N-625 carries your spare tube, tools, and snacks securely. For multi-day routes like Chakrata or the Auli–Joshimath corridor, the NAC 959XL Bikepacking Frame Bag gives you 1,000ml of waterproof frame-mounted storage.
  • Tubeless setup. Pine needles and sharp granite make punctures frequent on Uttarakhand trails. A tubeless setup with fresh sealant is essential. Run 25–30 PSI front and 28–32 PSI rear for rocky terrain.
  • Drivetrain care. Himalayan dust and monsoon mud destroy an unlubricated chain fast. Use NAC All Weather Magic Lube for monsoon and shoulder-season riding, and NAC PTFE Dry Lube for the pre-monsoon dry season.

Getting There

Dehradun is the best base for most Uttarakhand MTB trips — well connected by train from Delhi (Shatabdi, ~5 hours) and with a domestic airport. Most trails around Chakrata, Mussoorie, Auli, and Rishikesh are within 2–4 hours by road. Bring your own bike if possible — quality MTB rental options outside of Rishikesh are limited.
